Welcome

The Shaw Davey Slum is a popular venue in the Carlton area. Being close to all that Carlton has to offer, including Melbourne University, we are visited by people from all walks of life. The name is a play on words, derived from a poverty report written in 1958 by two land commissioners named Shaw and Davey about Carlton and surrounding areas. The commissioners declared that the areas around Carlton were to be known as 'slums' because of the state of the houses and style of living. The name is an oxymoron on the standard of service we provide and a celebration to Carlton’s diverse history of a great era for Australian Culture.
